I’m a big fan of well-done art which teaches things of Sacred Scripture. While not in the Bible, the destruction of Jerusalem in 70A.D. by the Romans is tightly linked to the history of the Bible.

The Romans destroyed the buildings which Jesus and his disciples would have walked by, eaten in, etc… The stories of this epic event in history are many, heart wrenching, and a good reminder to not forget history.

This painting by David Roberts done in the 1800’s is not an exact photograph of the event, but I think it does a good job capturing the heart of what happened. The original painting…which has been lost…measures 12 feet by 7 feet!! How I would love to see that. The interesting story of the painting can be read at this link.

Prints of the painting can be purchased at many places for a reasonable cost. A print of this painting is on my short list. Here’s a link to where the painting can be purchased.

I think well-done Christian art can be a good reminder of the things of God and also help to make our home a place focused on the things of the Lord for ourselves, our children and those who come into our home.

The moral conscience of a society has been spotlighted by two great men. Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. both appealed for the moral consciousness of their time to arise in response to social injustice. Abraham Lincoln made the observation that slavery was a taboo subject in social circles. It was only spoken in whispers. He claimed this was because the moral conscience knew slavery was wrong, yet the people’s moral consciousness was overcome with fear. In similar ways, Martin Luther King Jr., wrote to Daisy Bates in Arkansas saying, “adhere rigorously to a way of non-violence for the moral conscience of millions of white Americans is with you.”

Many observations of popular culture make it seem the United States has lost a collective moral conscience. It is my prayer today, on Martin Luther King Jr. day, for the Lord to raise up someone who would help to once again awaken the moral conscience of this country to abolish the whispered tragedy of the unborn citizen. May time come to their side and allow them to breathe the air of freedom, hope and opportunity.

My wife and I have been following the University of Florida the last couple years because the starting quarterback is the brother of a good friend of my wife (kinda confusing). Tim Tebow became the first sophomore in the history of the NCAA to win the coveted Heisman Trophy as the best football player in the nation. Surprisingly, doctors recommended to his parents in 1987 that he should be aborted.

Click here to read the article.

There are dozens of reasons why I think abortion should be stopped, this is just one more reason. Let God make the decisions, not us.

This series takes a look at scenes in the Bible which are little known but have a profound impact on what we think when we think about God.

There was nothing special about the morning I first met Ethan. My wife and I, as is the case most mornings, were rudely awaken by our heartless alarm clock. After snoozing a couple times we finally prodded each other out of bed. While the kids kept sleeping, I quietly stumbled toward the coffee maker. Minutes later, sitting down at the dining room table with coffee in hand, I open the book of all books.

I bow my head asking for guidance. I meet Ethan. He takes me by the hand, in a very manly way, and says he has something to show me. His words drip with passionate fervor. I feel at first like a boy hearing, “I gotta show you what I got for Christmas.” But, as I sip my coffee with two little kids sleeping, I don’t feel like a boy. I feel like a man, with sober judgment, who has lost his innocence.

My children can hear something wretchedly evil on the news and have no capacity to process the information. When I hear of evil, I am able to comprehend the depth of the darkness. I am no boy.

As I sip my coffee with the weight of this life, Ethan assures me I’ll…enjoy…my time with him. The way he said enjoy was rather odd. He paused before and afterward. I could tell he yearned to use words which hadn’t already been watered down by society. Under his breath he was shaking his head saying, “I love these shoes. My car is awesome. That movie is amazing.”

Ethan could tell he was losing me, he quickly snapped out of his train of thought and simply said, “Come, follow me.” I’m interested, the kids are still sleeping. We walk down a long hallway. As we approach the door I can feel an intensity which I have never considered. Without hesitation the door opens and Ethan takes me to a place which changes me. Ethan records what is there:

Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones! For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD, a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who are around him? - Psalm 89:5-7

I see a scene which can only be described as stunning. It seems like a dream but I know it to be just as real as the coffee I am holding between my two hands. Many are gathered. The majority of the people in the room are known as “holy ones.”

I have never encountered a holy one. I find myself staring at their faces and into their eyes. I realize these holy ones have a story to tell which I have never heard. Who are you? What are you? Where did you come from? Where do you live? What do you do? How old are you? As these questions are floating around they suddenly vanish. My attention has been stolen by another.

It’s common knowledge an object is best comprehended when compared to another. These holy ones are more amazing than anyone I have ever met, yet when I look to the center of the assembly the holy ones are nothing. I see the Lord. Ethan said it so wonderfully, “He is awesome above all who are around Him.” When looking to the Lord, the majesty of the holy ones fade away. Human language fails to describe this One. It is best to simply say, the holy ones are afraid of Him because He is so superior to them. I cannot speak, I can only sit and consider how great He must be.

Ethan slowly shuts the door, we head back through the corridor, my eyes fill with tears. I grin and think to myself, “We’re in good hands.” The holy ones sit in fear of His greatness, yet it is He who has stooped down to humanity and offers to carry all our pain for all His peace.

The kids are waking up, yet it is I who has woken up once again from a world trying to cover up the assembly.

For several years there has been a big debate regarding the use of embryonic stem cells. Those who fear the Lord have been saying, “Yes, embryonic stem cells could potentially save people’s lives, but every life is made in the hands of God.” Every life should be valued, so we must find another way to develop stem cells without destroying a human life.

Just a few months ago I was having this conversation with my uncle. He was telling me about some people he loved very much who would benefit from embryonic stem cells. He asked me how I could just sit there and let them die without allowing a treatment which might save their lives. I told him that I hope these loved ones get better, but I believe the Lord will provide another scientific solution which does not kill embryos.

Well, it looks like the Lord has shown two teams of scientists how to convert simple human skin cells into cells which look and act like embryonic stem cells:

Researchers in Wisconsin and Japan have turned ordinary human skin cells into what are effectively embryonic stem cells without using embryos or women’s eggs — the two hitherto essential ingredients that have embroiled the medically promising field in a long political and ethical debate (link to article).

Human skin cells are so plentiful and pose no ethical dilemmas. This news story should be a great encouragement to those who fear the Lord. If we do what is right, even though it might not make total sense at the time, in the long run it will always be the best action. Many people are realizing that today!
