Destruction of Jerusalem

destructionofjerusalem.jpgI’m a big fan of well-done art which teaches things of Sacred Scripture. While not in the Bible, the destruction of Jerusalem in 70A.D. by the Romans is tightly linked to the history of the Bible.

The Romans destroyed the buildings which Jesus and his disciples would have walked by, eaten in, etc… The stories of this epic event in history are many, heart wrenching, and a good reminder to not forget history.

This painting by David Roberts done in the 1800’s is not an exact photograph of the event, but I think it does a good job capturing the heart of what happened. The original painting…which has been lost…measures 12 feet by 7 feet!! How I would love to see that. The interesting story of the painting can be read at this link.

Prints of the painting can be purchased at many places for a reasonable cost. A print of this painting is on my short list. Here’s a link to where the painting can be purchased.

I think well-done Christian art can be a good reminder of the things of God and also help to make our home a place focused on the things of the Lord for ourselves, our children and those who come into our home.
