Convicting Spurgeon Quote

“He who lives without prayer, he who lives with little prayer, he who seldom reads the Word, and he who seldom looks up to heaven for a fresh influence from on high -he will be the man whose heart will become dry and barren.”
-Charles Spurgeon

Charles Spurgeon is probably one of the most quoted modern (1800’s) preachers. He has been referred to by some as the prince of preachers. He ministered faithfully in London and there are many interesting things from his life which are encouraging for those who are following the Savior. If you’re interested in learning more about Spurgeon post a comment below and I can post more about his life. Props to Shawn McDonald for posting this quote. May we live out Spurgeon’s words…

  1. I can relate to that quote. I go through spurts in my life where I will pray and then I kind of pray. Right now I’m going through a seperation with my husband so I’ve been praying like crazy. He’s not back yet, but I am gaining strength everyday through prayer. I have found I need prayer to maintain that vital connection with the God of the Universe and through the Holy Spirit, find the comfort and strength to go on. The bible says, “Pray without ceasing.” Without prayer (us speaking to God) and the bible (God speaking to us), our hearts would become dry and barren. GOD BE WITH YOU!

  2. I’m reading a book by Tony Evans, “Who is This King of Glory?” This is what he says, quote: How do you stay connected to Jesus every moment? One way is through prayer. Remember the command, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)? You don’t have to be on your knees moving your lips to pray. Prayer can be the atmosphere in which you exist. You can bring the Lord to bear on every aspect of your day by staying in touch with Him, communing with Him in your spirit. Prayer is an expression of your dependence on Christ.

I never thought of prayer as an atmosphere in which I exist. Also the lack of prayer being a way of not depending on Christ but going on my own.

Apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 Tony Evans asks “Do you really believe that?”

I must ask myself,”Does my prayer life reflect this?”
